Rolex Serial Numbers

The importance of the serial and model number identification system is that when buying any Rolex watch, you are confident in ensuring that the watch you are buying is correct to the year and model being sold by the seller. Unless you are buying from an authorized retailer, then all watches are complete with the correct paperwork / card as they will most likely be new, however although its unlikely a card or certificate is miss-matched at the branch, its always better to check at the point of sale as mistakes do happen. The wrong card or certificate can cause issues later on or affect the resale value when you come to sell the watch on.

The serial number chart is a good guide in checking the date of the watch, and by this we mean confirmation of the year of production when the watch was registered at Rolex from the point of manufacture. You can cross-reference this with your certificate that should accompany the watch even if this is not the original Rolex certificate but another form of authenticity that you are happy to except when buying a pre-owned Rolex watch.

Please remember that any watch “post” 2010 are un-dateable by a unique random serial number from Rolex, and therefore cannot be confirmed by our system checker as we are unable to confirm the new number identification).

You can find your serial and model number at the positions shown below (as per the photos) if you do not hold the any certification for the watch as not all pre-owned watches have the original paperwork for various reasons.

To check the serial and model you may wish to consult a watch technician or even at the point of sale for the seller to identify the model and serial number on the watch to you, as to check this against the original Rolex certificate or authenticity certificate provided by the seller. 

ROLEX SERIAL AND MODEL NUMBER IDENTIFCATION CHECK

The serial number is traditionally located at 6 o'clock between the lugs and under the bracelet. You will find the model number for the watch at the 12 o’clock position (The end lugs must be removed to locate these numbers). It is important when buying any pre-owned Rolex watch that you verify these numbers with the original Rolex certificate, or the Authenticity card with the watch from the seller.  

In 2005, Rolex began engraving the serial number on the “rehaut” (French for 'flange') between the dial and the crystal as well as the 6' o'clock location. Starting in 2008, Rolex stopped engraving the serial number at the case 6 o'clock location, using only the “rehaut” location. By 2010 this practice had gradually transitioned to all models. FROM 2010 ROLEX INTRODUCED A NEW SERIAL NUMBER SYSTEM

Around 2005 Rolex began engraving the serial numbers onto the inner rim of the watch, this is called the “rehaut. From 2010, Rolex stopped following any sequential numbering system or order altogether and now Rolex engraves its watches with a randomized, and unique identifying letter and number. The previous identification serial numbers had been relatively easy to ascertain a watch’s approximate age, or year of production using a database of lists assembled over the years, this will no longer be possible with these new random mixed serial numbers. Below is a 2013 Rolex GMT II, which shows the serial number as V9474364.
